Learn About Outpatient Services

Outpatient services provide specialized therapies to individuals of all ages. The goal is to help people receive the treatments and procedures they need without the expense and trauma of a hospital stay.

What are Outpatient Services?

There are many different types of outpatient services addressing a wide range of consumer needs. Some hospitals maintain outpatient specialty care community "satellites" in an attempt to make healthcare more accessible and convenient.

Rehabilitation centers offer many different services, including physical, speech and occupational therapy. Many who attend a rehab program have disabilities or ongoing medical problems, while others are recovering from an accident or a medical incident such as a stroke.

Renal dialysis centers are facilities where people with kidney disease or those awaiting a kidney transplant receive assistance from equipment which performs the necessary kidney functions.

Outpatient eye centers specialize in cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment, and laser surgery.

Radiology centers specialize in diagnostic and therapeutic radiology services like mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT).

What should I look for in an Outpatient Center?

Whatever particular outpatient services you need, make sure that the center's facility is licensed and staffed with board-certified specialists.

Choose a facility that provides the treatments you need in an environment that makes you feel comfortable.

How do I pay for Outpatient Services?

Outpatient services can be paid for by an individual's health insurance, or through Medicare, if the person is eligible. Find out if your policy or plan requires preauthorization or a referral. If so, contact your insurance company and find out what you need to do to obtain one.

If you do not have medical insurance and/or you are concerned about paying for your procedure or treatment, ask for an estimate in advance and request a payment plan.
