Learn About Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted living facilities, also known as residential care facilities or supportive housing, offer seniors a group residential setting, meals, health and personal services, and 24-hour monitoring.

What is an Assisted Living Facility?

Assisted living is appropriate for seniors who need help with the activities of daily living (ADLs), but don't require the intensive medical and nursing care provided in a nursing home. In an assisted living facility, residents have their own apartment and can typically choose furnished or unfurnished, studio or one-bedroom units with a private or shared bathroom and a kitchenette or full kitchen.

Assisted living services may be provided in independent facilities, near or integrated with nursing homes or hospitals, or as part of continuing care retirement communities. Facilities range from high-rise apartment buildings to residential homes.

What services are generally offered?

According to the Assisted Living Federation of America, assisted living residences mostly serve people who are in their mid-eighties and require help with three ADLs. Personal services (assistance with eating, bathing, dressing), 24-hour supervision, three daily meals in a group dining room, social and religious activities and health care services are typically offered. Some facilities also arrange transportation, laundry and linen service, and offer routine housekeeping and maintenance.

What should I look for in an Assisted Living Facility?

Assisted living facilities are not regulated by the federal government, but they are usually licensed at the state or local level. It's important to obtain personal recommendations and visit the facility. Before you go, print out Getcare's Assisted Living Facility Checklist, which provides detailed questions to help you evaluate and compare facilities. And be sure to ask your lawyer or a trusted advisor to review any contract before you sign it or pay a fee.

How do I pay for an Assisted Living Facility?

Costs for assisted living facilities vary, depending on the size of units, services provided and location. Monthly rent and fees can range from around $1,000 to more than $3,000.
